WHAT ARE ENDANGERED ANIMALS?
An endangered species is a type of organism that is threatened by extinction. Species become endangered for two main reasons: loss of habitat and loss of genetic variation.
FACTORS AFFECTING IT
1) Population reduction rate
Some species are considered endangered when the population has dropped between 50 and 70 percent. This decrease is measured at ten years or three generations of the species, depending on which is longer.
A species is considered endangered when the population has dropped by at least 70 percent, and the cause of its decline has been identified. Species are also classified as endangered when the population decreases by at least 50 percent, and the cause of their decline is unknown.
2) Wide area
Endangered species are less than 5,000 square miles (1,930 square miles). The habitat of endangered species is less than 500 square kilometers (193 square kilometers).
3) Population
A species is classified as endangered when there are fewer than 2,500 mature individuals. When species decline by at least 20 percent within five years or two generations, it is also classified as endangered.
4) Human limitations
A species is classified as endangered when its population is limited to less than 250 mature individuals. If the number of species is low this way, the habitat is not considered.
5) The risk of extinction in the wild is at least 20 percent within 20 years or five generations, depending on the longevity.
Endangered Species: Siberian Sturgeon
The Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) is a large fish found in rivers and lakes in the Siberian region of Russia. The Siberian sturgeon is a benthic species. Benthic organisms live in water.
The Siberian sturgeon is an endangered species because its population has declined by 50 to 80 percent over the past 60 years (three generations of sturgeon). Overfishing, poaching, and dam construction have all contributed to the decline. Pollution from mining operations has also led to abnormal behavior in sturgeon reproductive systems.
Endangered species: Tahitian reed warbler
The Tahitian reed warbler (Acrocephalus caffer) is a songbird found on the Pacific island of Tahiti. It is an endangered species because there are so few of it. The bird is only found on one island, which means its habitat level and habitat are inadequate.
